🛡️ AutoMod

Block harmful messages before anyone sees them. Vaqun sets up Discord's own AutoMod for you, so the rules keep working even if Vaqun is offline, and you'll also find them in Server Settings → AutoMod in Discord.

Set it up

  1. Go to the AutoMod section of your server's settings. It has three parts.
  2. Preset filters: turn on Discord's word lists for Profanity, Sexual content and Slurs.
  3. Spam and mentions: block messages Discord identifies as spam, and set a limit on mentions per message (1 to 50). Mention raid protection also stops many members mass-mentioning at once.
  4. Keyword rules: create your own rules, each with a list of words or phrases to block.
  5. Member names and profiles: block usernames, nicknames and bios containing words you choose (invite links, scam phrases). A matching member can't chat or join voice until they change it.

Every rule also has a When it triggers section:

  • Send an alert to: a channel where Discord posts what was blocked, who sent it and where.
  • Time out whoever triggers it: from 1 minute to 1 week, on top of blocking the message (keyword and mention rules only; that's Discord's rule).
  • Block message: what the member sees when their message is blocked.
  • Always allowed: words the rule never blocks, even when they match (keyword and preset rules).
  • Roles it skips and Channels and categories it skips: your moderators, a staff channel, a memes category...

Everything saves straight to Discord. You can also manage rules with the /automod command.

Good to know

  • Vaqun needs the Manage Server permission to create and change AutoMod rules.
  • A keyword like free nitro blocks that phrase; steam gift* blocks anything starting with it. Discord's own rules for wildcards apply.
  • Members with Administrator or Manage Server are never blocked, whatever the rule says.
  • AutoMod only looks at messages and profiles. For floods of new members, see Anti-raid.

FAQ

A message got through that should have been blocked. Check that the rule is on (the badge on the rule), and that the member, role or channel isn't one the rule skips.

Discord already showed a "Block Mention Spam" rule I never made. That's Discord's built-in default. The first time you save mention spam, Vaqun turns it into a real rule with your settings (Discord doesn't let anyone edit the default itself).

Saving says Discord rejected the change. The message says which part (a regex, an exempt channel...) and shows Discord's own explanation underneath.

I changed a rule in Discord directly. Does Vaqun notice? Yes. The dashboard reads the rules from Discord every time, so it always shows what's really there.

Can I restrict a channel to images only? That's not something AutoMod can do. Use Media channels instead, under Channels.
